Mobile Metro Jail reports 4th inmate death in 50 days

An inmate in the Mobile Metro Jail was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday and pronounced dead a short time later — marking the fourth inmate death at the correctional facility in the past 50 days.

William Gregory Hooper, 60, was arrested Aug. 8 on a public drunk charge, according to the jail docket.

The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office says Hooper, listed as homeless on the docket, was suffering from multiple health issues and was being monitored by the jail medical staff.

The Mobile County Major Crimes Unit is investigating the death, but preliminary investigation suggests Hooper died of natural causes, according to the MCSO.

On June 26, the sheriff’s office reported 38-year-old Ernest James Little Jr. was found unresponsive by his cellmates. Corrections officers administered Narcan, an over-the-counter treatment for opioid overdose, but he was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital.

Three weeks later, 30-year-old Terrell Markuise Moultrie was found dead in his cell, with investigators finding no evidence of foul play or trauma.

Then, on July 25, 46-year-old William Gerald Appling Jr. was found unresponsive in his cell, transported to a local hospital, and pronounced dead. Appling was taken to the jail’s medical clinic when he arrived July 19 due to injuries suffered in an assault prior to his arrest by the Prichard Police Department, according to the sheriff’s office.

No information on autopsy or toxicology reports have been released in any of the previous deaths.
