Mobile man stopped for reckless driving claimed to be a police officer, officials say

A 64-year-old Mobile man is facing multiple charges after he reportedly drove recklessly, telling people he was a peace officer and threatening to issue citations.

Mobile police said Wednesday officers had responded to a call about a man driving recklessly near the intersection of Airport Boulevard and University Boulevard last Thursday. Officers were told the man had nearly collided with a group of motorcyclists, claiming he was an officer and would issue citations.

Later, the same man — identified as Rick Edwin Earl — contacted Mobile police and again claimed he was a peace officer.

A quick investigation determined he wasn’t.

Friday, Earl was taken into custody, charged with five counts of reckless endangerment and two counts of impersonating a peace officer. He posted $11,000 bail and was released.
