Mobile man charged with possession of child porn had prior arrest for sexual abuse of child

A Mobile man accused in 2008 of sexually abusing two females, including one under the age of 12, has been arrested on four counts of possession of child pornography, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

Agents with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) unit executed a search warrant Tuesday at the Southgate Drive home of 57-year-old Andrew Joel Gafford. Evidence found led to the four child pornography charges against him.

In 2008, Gafford was accused of 1st and 2nd degree sexual assault involving an adult female and a female under the age of 12, both relatives of Gafford.

Gafford initially pleaded not guilty, but later pleaded guilty under an agreement with Mobile County prosecutors to the lesser charge of 2nd degree assault. A 10-year prison sentence was suspended and Gafford was instead placed on three years probation. He was also ordered to undergo two years of therapy.

Because he pleaded to the lesser charge, Gafford was not required to register as a sex offender. He is currently being held without bond in the Mobile Metro Jail pending a Wednesday bond hearing.

ICAC is a national network of 61 coordinated task forces, representing over 5,400 federal, state and local law enforcement dedicated to investigating, prosecuting and developing effective responses to internet crimes against children, according to the MCSO.
