Mobile man allegedly drove off from Piggly Wiggly in electric shopping cart
It won’t go down as one of the great high-speed pursuits in police history, but Mobile police were called to a Piggly Wiggly on Navco Road Wednesday after they said a man drove off in one of the store’s electric shopping carts.
The call came in about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Witnesses advised a man had driven away in the cart and provided a description — although that was hardly necessary, as officers quickly located the suspect still riding the cart, which has a top speed of 2.5 mph.
Where the man — identified as 66-year-old Herman J. McMillian — was headed isn’t definitively known, but his home address is just over a mile from the Piggly Wiggly.
McMillian was taken into custody, charged with 1st-degree theft. He also had an outstanding warrant for possession of a controlled substance. He remained in the Mobile Metro Jail as of Thursday afternoon pending an initial court appearance Friday.
