Mobile man, 74, arrested for Wednesday bank robbery
A 74-year-old man is in custody, charged with robbing a Mobile bank Wednesday afternoon.
According to Mobile police, officers responded to a report of a bank robbery about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Commonwealth National Bank on Springhill Avenue.
Officers were told a male suspect entered the bank and demanded money from a teller, who handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect then fled the scene on foot. He was located in the vicinity of the bank about two hours later and taken into custody. The stolen money was also recovered.
The suspect was identified as 74-year-old Herbert Smith. He was taken to the Mobile Police Department and charged with first-degree bank robbery. Smith was scheduled to be transported to Mobile Metro Jail by 7 p.m. Wednesday.
