Mobile jury convicts man in 2019 Grindr robbery, murder case
A Mobile jury found Sabronte Lashun Rhodes guilty of the 2019 murder of Johnny Soekhies, according to the Mobile County District Attorney’s Office.
Rhodes was arrested in October 2019 after investigators said he used the LGBTQ+ dating app Grindr to coax Soakhies into a meeting on Oyler Road on Oct. 25.
Soakhies got into Rhodes’ vehicle and then was robbed and shot, with Rhodes dumping the body at the end of a cul-de-sac off Oyler Road near Lynda Court.
The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said they believe Rhodes targeted the gay community and used the Grindr app to lure other men into meeting.
At the time of his arrest, Rhodes was in an adult store with another man he had met through the app.
Rhodes has a lengthy criminal history, dating back to 1998.
In addition to the murder conviction, Rhodes has pending charges of 2nd degree assault, promoting prison contraband, breaking and entering and attempting to elude police, according to the Mobile Metro Jail docket.
