Mobile inmate housed in mental health unit found dead in cell

A Mobile inmate being housed in the jail’s mental health unit was found dead in his cell last Thursday, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, which operates the Mobile Metro Jail.

About 4:17 a.m. last Thursday, corrections officers found 77-year-old William Franklin unresponsive in his cell, which he shared with three other inmates. Officers removed Franklin from his cell and began CPR and other life-saving measures, according to the sheriff’s office.

Mobile County emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and Franklin was pronounced dead at 4:45 a.m.

Franklin was arrested on Nov. 30 for 2nd-degree criminal trespassing and was being held in lieu of $500 bond. He was housed in the jail’s mental health “wedge” (unit) due to what the sheriff’s office said was his “deteriorating cognitive state.”

The sheriff’s office also said they were unable to locate any of Franklin’s family members to provide a death notice.
