Mobile high-speed chase ends with 18-year-old shot in buttocks, 2 arrested
An 18-year-old man was shot in the buttocks following a high-speed chase from Prichard to Interstate 10 and Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile early Friday.
According to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy shot Zachery Reed in the buttocks while attempting to remove passengers from the vehicle following a high-speed chase that began at 1:14 a.m. in Prichard. Reed was the driver who led authorities on the chase.
The chase began after Sheriff’s deputies initiated the traffic stop. It continued on I-10, with the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed without headlights.
The vehicle exited I-10 and continued onto Dauphin Island Parkway where a precision immobilization technique was utilized by deputies to completely disable the vehicle. The technique, known as a PIT maneuver, is used by law enforcement to force a fleeing vehicle to abruptly turn 180 degrees, causing it to stop.
Also arrested on the scene was 18-year-old Anthony Phillips, who was the vehicle’s front passenger. A back passenger fled the scene. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for the passenger.
Reed was taken to a local hospital and released. He and Phillips are being held at Mobile Metro Jail.
