The vaccination against rabies costs $12 per pet. All rabies vaccinations require cash payment.

The MCHD Rabies Officer offers low-cost vaccinations for residents’ dogs, cats, and ferrets at several locations once a month. The state of Alabama assigns local health departments the duty of giving pet owners access to reasonably priced rabies vaccinations. In October, the MCHD Rabies Officer immunized 173 people (146 dogs and 27 cats).

The central nervous system is attacked by the rabies virus. Once symptoms show, it is lethal and spreads from infected creatures to humans.

Rabies symptoms might include erratic behavior, agitation, headache, fever, lack of appetite or thirst, dizziness, circling, seizures, coma, and, in the worst case scenario, death. Humans and other warm-blooded mammals are susceptible to rabies.

In 2022, 1,537 household pets (290 cats and 1,247 dogs) received vaccinations from MCHD’s Rabies Officer, according to the department.
