Mobile County man flees deputies on utility vehicle, crashes; passenger killed, sheriff says
One man is dead and another on the run after Mobile County deputies tried to arrest a man wanted on multiple charges, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were at an address on Mason Ferry Road in northwest Mobile County Friday to speak with the grandparents regarding the whereabouts of the wanted man, identified as 21-year-old James Leon Baker.
While there, deputies spotted Baker leaving from the back of the residence, heading for a wooded area. Baker and an unidentified subject jumped into a Polaris utility vehicle and fled the scene down Mason Ferry Road.
Deputies gave chase, with the utility vehicle wrecking prior to the deputies’ arrival at another location along Mason Ferry Road. Baker fled into the woods, but the man riding with him was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Baker remained at large as of late Friday. He is wanted for violating the terms of his parole. Baker is also awaiting trial on charges of identity theft and 2nd-degree property theft.
