Mobile County Health Department investigating possible cyber attack

The Mobile County Health Department shut down its computer network after suspicious activity indicated a possible cyber attack.

Officials said they are working with IT security consultants to determine the severity of the potential incident. All appropriate authorities have been notified, and the impact is still unknown, officials said.

“The care and services we provide to our patients, and the community remains our key focus and mission,” said Dr. Kevin Michaels, Mobile County health officer.

All department services will be available Monday with some potential modifications.

Cyber attacks on public systems are becoming more frequent, impacting public services and threatening daily operations.

Birmingham city computers were attacked by a hacker in March, causing a lull in some services.

A lack of computers limited police ability to check to see if a vehicle has been reported stolen or if a person had outstanding warrant. Also, some employees reported shortfalls in their paychecks with the staff resorting to paper timesheets rather than electronic timekeeping.

The network outage had forced to use pen and paper for time sheets.

The city of Birmingham is still recovering from the damage.
