Mobile County 911 director resigns after third alcohol-related arrest
The former director of the Mobile County Communications District, Charles McNichol, submitted a letter resigning his position effective immediately after he was arrested Saturday night for driving under the influence, according to board Chairman Roy Hodge.
McNichol, 58, has been charged with driving under the influence and was released on $1,000 bond, according to booking information from the sheriff’s department.
The Mobile County Communications District is responsible for receiving the county’s 911 calls and dispatching first responders.
The district was unable to provide information about what was written in the letter or the events leading to his arrest.
McNichol has had two similar arrests, according to news reports. He was arrested in 2020 by Daphne police after he was found unconscious behind the wheel of his county-issued vehicle in an O’Charley’s parking lot off U.S. 90. He also faced a public intoxication charge in 2018 for an incident that occurred when he was in his vehicle, according to WKRG.
In 2020, he released a statement following his arrest.
“I do and will accept responsibility for my actions,” McNichol said, according to NBC15. “That said, I have a problem that I will need help fixing. I have already begun taking those steps. This is serious to me and I look forward to better days. Truly I am sorry for the embarrassment to my family, my employer and co-workers and this community that I love. All prayers and support are appreciated.”
Kristi Stamnes, who has worked most of her career in 911 operations and emergency management, has assumed McNichol’s duties.
