Mobile City Council dissolves four committees; creates new tax district
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Mobile City Council, the council made quick work of dissolving the four citizens’ advisory committees it started getting rid of last week.
“Every one of these [committees] has been discussed at length,” Councilmember Scott Jones said Wednesday. “All of these are defunct, the members had rotated off, there were no meetings that had been held, and there was no ordinance or any semblance of action taken place in well over a year. It makes no sense to keep these on the books.”
The council voted unanimously to dissolve the Blue Ribbon Affordable Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization Commission, the Citizens’ Advisory Committee on Contracting Opportunities for Small Business and Minority Owned Firms, the Citizens’ Budget and Finance Advisory Committee and the Public Transit Advisory Committee.
None of the dissolved committees generated much outcry, but Beverly Cooper of Stand-Up Mobile, a voting rights organization in the city, implored the council Wednesday not to dissolve the Blue Ribbon commission, arguing that there was still a need for the committee in Mobile.
“Council is planning to vote to dissolve this commission, rather than revitalize it, and give some of our smart and committed citizens the opportunity to work to address the issues,” Cooper said.
