Mobile City Council begins process of selling Ladd-Peebles to school system

The Mobile City Council Tuesday approved two fund transfers and introduced two items that will set the stage for selling Ladd-Peebles Sports and Entertainment Complex to the Mobile County Public School System in the next few weeks.

The two fund transfers, totaling $800,000, will go toward paying utility costs and salaries for the three employees contracted to manage the stadium and field repairs. Those repairs must begin July 1 for the stadium to be ready for football games in August, Councilmember William Carroll said during the council’s pre-meeting.

In a release last week, the city of Mobile stated that it had taken immediate control of the stadium after it learned that the stadium was in arrears on utility payments and unable to make payroll. The stadium had previously been managed by the Ladd-Peebles board of directors.

Now, the city council will consider selling the stadium to the school system for $1 and authorize an intergovernmental agreement that would allow the city of Mobile to use the facility for certain events, including three HBCU football games. In exchange, the city of Mobile will provide up to $9 million in maintenance and operations improvements for the stadium over five years, in addition to the money for immediate emergency field repairs.

But the details of how those city events will be operated are still being worked out, city of Mobile Chief of Staff James Barber said. The Mobile County Board of School Commissioners and the city of Mobile are in the process of negotiating the agreement, he said.
