The Mobile City Council on Tuesday authorized demolishing the Mobile Civic Center, paving the way for a new nearly $300 million arena at the site that promises to draw top touring entertainment acts, sports and possibly even ice hockey.

“Major milestone,” Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said Tuesday. “This has been going on for a while, and we’ve touched a lot of bases.”
