Mobile Arts Council head to step down; search underway for successor

With the news that executive director Lucy Gafford plans to step down, the Mobile Arts Council has begun its search for a new leader.

According to a statement released Tuesday by the organization, Gafford informed the MAC board that she plans to resign at the end of April in order to “focus more deeply on her own artistic endeavors.”

“It’s with a heart full of gratitude and optimism that I plan to pivot towards devoting more time to my artistic career,” Gafford said in Tuesday’s announcement. “The Council is at a juncture of financial and organizational vigor, which gives me great comfort as I prepare to step away. My commitment to MAC and its mission remains unwavering. I look forward to supporting its future in a new capacity, potentially as a contracted artist, and remain enthusiastic about its continued success and growth.”

Gafford has spent more than a decade with MAC, including almost five years as executive director. MAC’s announcement said her time there has been “highlighted by the expansion of staff, programming, and the establishment of significant initiatives such as the statewide partnership with Amp Up Arts, the launch of the City of Mobile Poet Laureate program, and the execution of over 30 public art projects.”

The MAC board is seeking a “visionary leader” to follow Gafford. “The ideal candidate will possess a passion for the arts, a talent for fostering community engagement, and a strategic vision for enhancing Mobile’s cultural landscape,” said Tuesday’s announcement. “Responsibilities will include overseeing the community gallery, developing strategic partnerships, expanding community outreach, and leading fundraising efforts.”
