Mobile adds thousands of jobs in 2022; Chamber looks to grow workforce
The job market in Mobile grew significantly over the last year, the Mobile Chamber says, increasing the need for more workers in the city.
According to the Mobile Chamber, 1,342 jobs were created from projects announced through its Industrial Development Board and Industrial Development Authority. That’s more than double the number of jobs created through the IDB in 2021, when 506 jobs were created. Those numbers don’t include the 1,200 new jobs announced at Austal or the jobs that will be created with Airbus’ third final assembly line, both of which were announced last year.
And those numbers don’t include jobs created in Baldwin County, including the new Novelis aluminum recycling plant, which is promised to create 1,000 jobs.
“To be in a community like ours, where workforce is our number one problem, we’re doing something right,” Bradley Byrne, president and CEO of the Mobile Chamber, said.
According to Byrne, almost all sectors of Mobile’s economy have been growing, including chemical, aerospace, heavy manufacturing, and logistics and distribution. The only sector seeing a downturn, he says, is residential real estate, which has been slowing as interest rates increase.
