MLB suspends White Sox’s Tim Anderson after fight

Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson got decked by a punch from Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez on Saturday night, and now the former Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa star appears to have received the stiffest punishment from Major League Baseball for the benches-clearing incident.

MLB has disciplined eight members of the White Sox and Guardians after a fight between Anderson and Ramirez in the sixth inning of Saturday night’s game.

After Ramirez slid into second base to beat the throw to Anderson for a double, the two players squared off and exchanged punches, with Anderson catching one on the chin and going down.

On Monday, MLB announced Anderson had been suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount. Ramirez was suspended for three games and also fined an undisclosed amount.

Cleveland manager Terry Francona, third-base coach Mike Sarbaugh and pitcher Emmanuel Clase and Chicago manager Pedro Grifol received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine apiece. Along with Anderson and Ramirez, they were ejected from the game after Saturday night’s incident.

In addition, White Sox pitcher Michael Kopech and Guardians outfielder Gabriel Arias were fined an undisclosed amount. Neither was ejected on Saturday night.

Anderson and Ramirez have appealed their punishment, which will allow them to continue to play. On Monday night, the White Sox host the New York Yankees and the Guardians host the Toronto Blue Jays.

Anderson did not play in Chicago’s 7-4 victory over Cleveland on Sunday.
