Mistrial declared in case of ex-Alabama officer charged with murdering neighbor
A Mobile County judge on Wednesday declared a mistrial in the murder trial of a former Prichard police officer accused of killing his neighbor while off-duty in 2020, according to court records.
Mobile County Circuit Court Judge S. Wesley Pipes declared the mistrial in the proceedings against Johnathan Murphy II, 38, following a hung jury, court records showed.
Murphy was charged with intentional murder in the fatal shooting of his neighbor, 39-year-old Larry Taylor, in December 2020.
The deadly shooting occurred at the Avalon Plaza Apartments on 3600 Michael Blvd., Mobile police said at the time.
Taylor was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds when police arrived. He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Murphy was working as a courtesy officer for the apartment complex at the time of Taylor’s death, police said.
He was fired from the Prichard Police Department following the allegations.
The shooting was the second slaying linked to Murphy.
In November 2017, Murphy shot and killed 56-year-old Lawrence Hawkins during a traffic stop. Hawkins was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Hawkins’ family filed a wrongful death suit against the former officer in 2020.
