Mississippi teacher murdered by 14-year-old daughter, stepfather also shot, sheriff says

A 14-year-old Mississippi girl allegedly shot and killed her mother before wounding her stepfather, according to investigators in Rankin County, Miss.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey said deputies responded to a call just after 5 p.m. Tuesday regarding a shooting in a residential area in Brandon, a suburb of the capital city of Jackson.

When they arrived, deputies found the stepfather suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

He told the deputies had arrived home and found his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, dead from a gunshot wound and his stepdaughter still armed with a handgun.

The stepdaughter fired and struck the stepfather, he told deputies, but he was able to physically overpower the girl and disarm her. She fled the scene, jumping over the backyard fence and running away.

Law enforcement, aided by a police helicopter, located the girl not far from the residence about 30 minutes after the initial call, according to the sheriff’s office.

The teenager has been charged with the murder of her mother and the attempted murder of her stepfather. She is being held at the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.

Ashley Smylie was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, according to school officials.
