Mississippi State players on new Auburn tackle Percy Lewis: ‘He’s a dog’
Auburn made a big addition to its offensive line in January signing Percy Lewis out of the transfer portal from Mississippi State.
The move was big in more ways than one, as the 6-foot-7, 355-pound tackle from Sallis, Mississippi, was the No. 1 ranked JUCO offensive tackle in 2022, according to 247Sports, before playing two seasons at Mississippi State.
“Percy’s a dog,” Mississippi State transfer John Lewis said of his former teammate at SEC Media Days. “They’re getting a great player. I wish he could’ve stayed, but it’s cool.”
Lewis started in eight of the 25 games he played in over two seasons at Mississippi State. His size and strength are his most notable attributes, which drew praise from former teammate and fellow offensive lineman Albert Reese IV.
“He’s obviously a very big man and a talented player. I think they’re getting a good add-on to their offensive line,” Reese said.
Lewis entered the transfer portal on Dec. 19, and Auburn announced he signed on Jan. 11. His decision to transfer from Mississippi State came after his head coach, Zach Arnett was fired. When asked about the decision to transfer, Lewis mentioned stability.
“When I was at State I had different coaches every year. So like I said, with them coming in with a different coach I said I might as well go somewhere else and start off fresh with a better program,” Lewis said in March.
His size and ability already caught the eyes of his teammates during spring practice. Senior BUCK Jalen McLeod raved about his athleticism combined with his size and how that helps the team.
“The size he has and how athletically he can move his feet, that every day is going to help all of us, because we’re going to face some bigger tackles,” McLeod said. “He’s bigger than Bama tackles, and he’s more athletic than them.”
Lewis joins Ronan Chambers and Seth Wilfred as one of three offensive line transfers, Wilfred coming from JUCO. They will look to replace holes left by Gunner Britton and Kam Stutts who Auburn lost to graduation.
