Mississippi man drowns off Gulf Shores, 2 others rescued

A Mississippi man died after he drowned Sunday afternoon in the Gulf of Mexico off Gulf Shores, authorities said Monday.

Darius Marquelle Smith, 23, of Amory, Mississippi, was pulled from the waters off the gulf around 1:39 p.m. Sunday, said Baldwin County Coroner Dr. Brian Pierce.

First responders administered CPR and Smith was taken to the South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department, said Pierce.

Smith was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. Sunday. His death is being investigated as a drowning.

The Mississippi man was with a couple of other swimmers when they all become distressed, said Gulf Shores Fire Rescue Chief Mark Sealy.

Two swimmers with Smith were rescued.
