Mississippi coast mother, boyfriend charged in beating death of 5-year-old

A Mississippi coast mother and her live-in boyfriend are charged with capital murder in the beating death of the woman’s 5-year-old son.

According to Gulfport police, officers were calle to the 3300 block of 39th Avenue in Gulfport on April 14 on a medical emergency involving a child. The child was transported to Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy would ultimately reveal the child died from blunt force trauma and the death was ruled a homicide. Gulfport detectives interviewed the mother, 31-year-old Lachelle Renae Washington, and her boyfriend, 29-year-old Denzel Jamal Blakely, and both admitted culpability in the child’s death, according to police.

Washington and Blakely live together and have another child together, according to Gulfport police, but Blakely is not the father or stepfather of the victim, identified by Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer as Edward Lamptey.

Washington and Blakely were taken into custody Monday. Blakely has been charged with capital murder, while Washington is charged with child deprivation of necessaries with substantial harm.

As a capital murder suspect, Blakely is ineligible to post bond. Washington’s bond was set at $50,000. As of midday Tuesday, both remained in the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.
