Mississippi coast couple charged with sexually abusing foster kids
A Mississippi coast couple is facing multiple charges after police say they physically and sexually abused two young boys who had been placed in their care as foster parents, the Sun Herald is reporting.
Oliver Cole and Sara Marie Cole, both 28, were arrested by Gulfport police in late September. Oliver Cole is charged with two counts of sexual battery, while Sara Cole is charged with one count of sexual battery and one count of molestation.
According to the report, the investigation began when one of the two foster children in the Cole’s care told a counselor about the alleged abuse. The boys, ages 6 and 7, had been placed in the Cole’s home after their mother was arrested on a felony drug charge.
The two boys had been in the Cole’s home for about a year.
During a preliminary hearing, a Gulfport police officer testified the Cole’s sexually assaulted the boys in front of each other. The Cole’s are also accused of forcing the boys to perform oral sex and urinating on them.
Other charges are likely, prosecutors told the newspaper, after a forensic examination of the Cole’s electronic devices is complete. One of the children told investigators the Coles used their phones to take pictures of them during the alleged abuse.
Bond for Oliver Cole was set at $900,000, while Sara Cole’s bond was set at $575,000, according to the Harrison County (Miss.) Jail Docket. The Sun Herald reported the couple’s attorney requested a bond reduction, but Judge Damon Reese denied the request.
Nevertheless, both Oliver and Sara Cole posted bond and were released last Friday.
