Midfield mother shot to death in city’s 2nd homicide this weekend

An investigation is underway after a 33-year-old mother of two was killed in Midfield Saturday night.

Police identified the victim as Koreyanta Davis. She was affectionately to her friends as Koko.

Midfield police received a 911 call at 9:51 p.m. reporting a physical altercation in the 500 block of Henson Street, said Sgt. Michael Jeffries.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, officers found the victim lying near the edge of the street. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jeffries said investigators believe Davis was shot. They are awaiting confirmation from the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

The shooter fled the scene. No arrests have been made.

Davis’s best friend, Amber Nashay, said Davis leaves behind two young sons who “loved their mama to pieces.”

“Who didn’t know Koko?’’ Nashay said. “She was the energy. She was loved by everybody.”

“Koko leaves memories with a lot of people,’’ she said. “This one hurts for sure.”

“Koko was one of the most outgoing and caring people anyone could meet,’’ said Carlos Chaverst Jr., executive director of the Carlos Chaverst Foundation. “Koko always looked after others even while dealing with her own issues.”

“Everyone knew Koko and she was know to always make other people smile,’’ Chaverst said. “I know she’s smiling down on us now knowing she’s in a better place than this wicked world.”

Davis is the second homicide this weekend in Midfield.

Just before 3 a.m. Saturday, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Eighth Avenue in Midfield on reports of someone shot during an argument.

Deputies got to the location and found a 38-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound, said Lt. Joni Money. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A suspect was detained.

There have been six homicides this year in Midfield.
