Midday shooting inside Ensley home leaves man dead, woman in custody

A midday shooting in Ensley left one man dead.

Birmingham’s West Precinct officers responded a noon Wednesday to a report of a person shot in the 1400 block of 29th Street in Ensley.

When they arrived on the scene, they found the victim on the floor of a residence. He had sustained a gunshot wound, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to UAB Hospital. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Fitzgerald said the preliminary investigation indicates the victim was involved in an altercation inside the residence before shots were fired. Officers took a female into custody at the scene.

The woman is undergoing questioning by homicide detectives. A motive has not yet been determined.

Fitzgerald said investigators will present the case information to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges should be filed.

The victim is the city’s 14th homicide so far this year. Of those, one has been ruled justifiable and has not been deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County there have been 18 homicides, including the 14 in Birmingham.
