Michael Penix Jr. on learning Kalen DeBoer’s offense: ‘It’ll come easy’

When Alabama football takes the field in 2024, the offensive attack will look different. Retired head coach Nick Saban and his offensive coordinator Tommy Rees are gone, with Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb now in their places.

DeBoer’s offense will be explosive, just as it was at his previous stop, where he led Washington to a national title berth. The centerpiece of that unit was quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who was asked Wednesday in Mobile what made the offense so successful.

“Coaches,” Penix said after a Senior Bowl practice. “That offense translates anywhere. I feel like that offense that we ran, it was a pro-style offense, that can translate in the NFL as well. But the coaches, the way that they prepared us each and every week, day in and day out, preparation never stopped.”

Alabama has an incumbent quarterback in Jalen Milroe, who returns for his fourth season in Tuscaloosa after leading the Crimson Tide to an SEC championship and a College Football Playoff appearance. The offense will have a new-look linel, with Washington transfer center Parker Brailsford in, and names like Seth McLaughlin and Kadyn Proctor out.

Brailsford isn’t the only offensive transfer from UW, with redshirt freshman quarterback and wideout Germie Bernard also making the move with DeBoer. On Wednesday, the coach said their presence could help Milroe with the transition.

“Those that have come with us from Washington, they certainly have an understanding of the system, what certain concepts are called, how we teach them,” DeBoer said. “So hopefully back on campus they’re picking up on those things with Jalen, and Austin, as well as having a center like Parker who knows all the calls, we can hit the ground running here next week when it comes to installing offense and systems.”

DeBoer said that the Tide staff will be spending more time with players putting the system into place next week. February kicks off his first full month as the Crimson Tide’s head coach, after getting the job on Jan. 12.

Penix said that from a quarterback’s perspective, learning the new offense wasn’t hard

“I don’t really think it’s difficult at all,” he said. “I don’t see too many offenses being difficult to pick up. It’s about the way you prepare and the amount of studying that you do. If you’re willing to put in the extra work to be successful, you’ll do it and it’ll come. It’ll come easy, especially with those guys coaching. They make sure you’re prepared to the level to where it’s hard for you to fail.”

For fans, the first look at the new offense could come on April 13, the announced date for Alabama’s A-Day spring game.
