Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa wins NFL monthly award

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, the NFL announced on Thursday.

In helping the Dolphins win their first three games of the 2023 NFL campaign, Tagovailoa completed 72-of-101 passes for 1,024 yards with eight touchdowns and two interceptions. He leads the AFC in passing yards and touchdown passes, and his passing-efficiency rating of 121.9 is the highest in the NFL.

Tagovailoa had 466 passing yards in Miami’s 36-34 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sept. 10 – the fourth-most in a season-opening game in NFL history.

On Sunday, the former Alabama All-American led the Dolphins to a 70-20 victory over the Denver Broncos. Miami became the fourth NFL team to score 70 points in a game and the second to gain at least 700 yards.

The other monthly award winners were San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey, NFC Offensive; Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt, AFC Defensive; Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons, NFC Defensive; Buffalo Bills kicker Tyler Bass, AFC Special Teams; and Tampa Bay Buccaneers punter Jake Carmada, NFC Special Teams.

The NFL also announced the Rookies of the Month for September on Thursday, with Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud winning on offense and New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez winning on defense.

Tagovailoa’s award extends to four seasons a streak by Crimson Tide alumni in Player of the Month awards.

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry was the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October in 2020. Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs was the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September in 2021. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, Henry was the AFC Offensive Player of the Month for October and New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams was the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for October in 2022.
