Mexican Buc-eeâs ripoff BUK-IIâS redesigns mascot to avoid lawsuit

BUK-II’S, a store in Mexico that went viral this summer for its logo’s similarity to Buc-ee’s beloved beaver, recently underwent a redesign.

The initial BUK-II’S mascot had a red hat, buckteeth, similar coloring and a yellow circle background that mirrored Buc-ee’s beaver.

The man that posted the first viral BUK-II’S photo also told MySA in July that the animal was a gopher not a beaver.

That didn’t deter Buc-ee’s from hinting that it would take legal action.

Buc-ee’s is known for freshly prepared food and great service, the company’s general counsel Jeff Nadalo said in an emailed statement to The Dallas Morning News.

“We have invested heavily in innovation across the company to create and maintain these award-winning guest experiences,” he said. “The business in question has infringed upon the intellectual property of Buc-ee’s that has been cultivated for decades, and it will not be tolerated.”

The BUK-II’S mascot’s makeover included losing the hat and yellow circle background. The animal is also sporting a mullet-like haircut and a fuller face.

TikTok commenters appeared to support the change, saying: “I love it even more now,” “I just hollered,” “major upgrade” and “Low key I like the mullet tbh.”

The post had more than 1.3 million views, almost 150,000 likes and nearly 900 comments as of Wednesday afternoon.

BUK-II’S is in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, a few minutes south of the Los Indios Free Trade Bridge that’s over the Rio Grande connecting the city to Texas. A man affiliated with the market previously said the store would likely sell groceries, such as fruits and vegetables, as well as beer.

Texas’ Buc-ee’s has dozens of locations across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee, and has shutdown at least one other business that tried using its logo.
