The Tennessee Volunteers are the current favorites to win the SEC regular season title. But, Alabama and Auburn are still in the hunt. Could the Tide or the Tigers overtake the Volunteers?
Tennessee Volunteers
With conference records of 12-3, Tennessee and Alabama are currently tied atop the SEC standings. But with odds of -130 on DraftKings, Tennessee has better odds to win the SEC regular season title.
The Vols are led by senior guard Dalton Knecht, who is scoring 20.8 points per game. Other scorers averaging double digit points include Jonas Aidoo with 12.1 points per game, and Zakai Zeigler with 11.1 points per game.
Tennessee has a stingy defense, holding their opponents to a shooting percentage of 38.3, which is the best in the SEC. That has translated to allowing just 67.2 points per game, good for second-best in the conference. If the Vols want to win the SEC regular season title, the defense has to continue to play at a high level down the stretch.
After suffering three straight losses to Purdue, Kansas, and North Carolina in November, the Vols have won 18 of their last 21 games. They have three regular season games remaining, including a massive tilt in Tuscaloosa against Alabama on Saturday, March 2. The SEC regular season title could very well be decided in that matchup.
Tennessee has 11 SEC regular season titles in program history, with the last coming in 2018.
Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama has the second-best odds to win the SEC regular season title at -110 on FanDuel.
Alabama plays a lot of high-scoring games. The Tide lead the nation in points per game with 91.5, but they allow 79.2 points per game, which is 344th in the country and last in the SEC. Needless to say, they rely on their high-flying offense to win games.
Scoring depth is a strong point for the Tide, as they have four players averaging more than ten points per game. Mark Sears leads the way with 20.6 points per game, while Aaron Estrada (13.3), Grant Nelson (12.3), and Rylan Griffen (11.6) all contribute in a big way.
As previously mentioned, the Tide host the Vols on March 2. So while they trail Tennessee in the SEC regular season title odds market right now, a win on March 2 could shake things up.
Alabama has won the SEC regular season title 12 times, most recently in 2023.
Auburn Tigers
The Auburn Tigers are still in the hunt for the SEC regular season title, but their odds are much longer.
The Tigers suffered a big blow on Feb. 28, losing to Tennessee by a score of 92-84. Before that game, they had odds of +500 to overtake Tennessee and Alabama and win the SEC regular season title. Now, they have odds of +15000 to do so on BetMGM.
While they are now considered a long shot to win a regular season conference title, Auburn is still plenty capable of making noise in March Madness. Under head coach Bruce Pearl, the Tigers have made the Round of 32 three times, and made it all the way to the Final Four in 2018-19, before losing to eventual champion Virginia.
Auburn has won five SEC regular season titles in program history, last winning it in 2022.
