Memorial service for swimmer Carson Muir set for March 16 in Birmingham

A public memorial service for champion swimmer Carson Muir has been set for March 16 at Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, her father told AL.com.

Muir, 18, died along with University of Wyoming teammates Luke Slabber of Cape Town, South Africa, and Charlie Clark of Las Vegas in a one-car crash on Feb. 22 near the Wyoming-Colorado border. The teammates were returning from a lunch outing to nearby Fort Collins, Colo., when the accident took place, Mark Muir said.

Muir was a state champion in the 500-meter freestyle in 2022 at Spain Park High School and was a longtime member of the Birmingham Swim League, where she first competed at age 7. She still holds numerous individual records at her high school and within the Birmingham Swim League program.

Dan Rozick, head coach with Birmingham Swim League, worked with Muir for more than two years. There are more than 100 boys and girls in the BSL program at any given time, he said, but Muir stood out, both as an athlete, and as a person.

“Carson was just the best that you could ask for because she was really self-in-tuned with what she needed and what she wanted, and was very intrinsically motivated, which made her easy to work with,” Rozick said. “And really enjoyable, because kids that are like that, they just thrive and they’re happy to be at practice. That was really the epitome of who she was. She was a hard worker, and definitely didn’t back down from a challenge when she was given it, which, as a coach, you love that. She was always willing to try something new and something different.

“As a person, she was great to be around, a real joy to spend time with on the pool deck. We spend a lot of time with these athletes at the senior level. When they’re in high school, you’re seeing these kids as much as their parents do, more than their teachers, just because of the long hours. She was just one of those that’s fun to be on-deck with, a fun personality. She was one of those who was going to find a way to make it fun, not just for her, but for everybody, including me as a coach. And that’s unique.”

The daughter of Kristie and Mark Muir, she was a freshman at Wyoming specializing in long-distance freestyle and butterfly events in the pool and majoring in animal and veterinary sciences in the classroom. In addition to swimming, she also had a deep love of the outdoors, which drew her to Wyoming, according to her obituary. “The world needs more cowgirls,” she said upon deciding where to attend college.

Her family notes that her favorite Bible verse was Matthew 17:20, which in the New King James Version reads:

So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Muir will be honored with a “Celebration of Life” at the Church of the Highlands’ Grants Mill Campus at 4700 Highlands Way in Birmingham on March 16. Family will begin receiving visitors at 1 p.m., with the service to follow at 3 p.m. The service will also be livestreamed.

In addition to her parents, Carson is survived by her brother Austin Muir, as well as grandparents Sandra and Gary Deavours, Lyn and Bob Frederickson and Jackie and David Muir, and aunts and uncles Andy Campbell, Craig Deavours, Amy Halliwell and Ryan Muir.
