Meet the biggest 2025 impact coaching hires in Alabama high school football

There have been more than 100 head coaching changes among Alabama high school football teams in the offseason.

Which new coach will make the biggest impact on his team in 2025?

That’s the latest question we posed to our panel of AL.com high school experts as we continue to preview the upcoming football season.

Here are their responses:

Thomas Ashworth, AL.com

Juan Johnson, James Clemens: The Jets hiring Johnson following the retirement of Chad McGehee was a great move for a solid north Alabama program. With the success he had at Baker last season, will he be able to bring the Jets their first playoff win since 2019?

Juan Johnson, James Clemens: The longtime Hewitt-Trussville assistant spent just one year at Class 7A Baker, but it was a good one. He led the Hornets to a 9-3 season and a first-round playoff win against his former school. Now, he’ll try to get the Jets back in the playoff win column.

Kirk Johnson, Benjamin Russell: Don’t expect Johnson to stop winning big just because he’s at a new school. The Wildcats are ready to win now.

Luke Pruitt, Boaz: Pruitt takes over the 5A Boaz program after seven successful seasons at Pisgah. He led the Eagles to 52 wins and a pair of Class 2A semifinal appearances. He will try to elevate a Boaz program that went 9-3 and reached the second round of the playoffs in 2024.

Ben Thomas, AL.com

Justin Jones, Robertsdale: Jones took 5A Beauregard to the playoffs in his last three seasons there, including a 10-2 run in 2022. He is now tasked with turning around a Robertsdale program that hasn’t been to the postseason since 2004 and hasn’t won a playoff game since 2001.

Kirk Johnson, Benjamin Russell: All Johnson did at Montgomery Catholic was go 55-2 in four years and win a pair of state championships. His teams averaged 44 points a game. Now, he takes over a Benjamin Russell team with only two playoff wins in the last nine seasons, looking to restore the roar of the Wildcats.

Bobby Carr, Prattville: Perfect marriage between veteran coach with proven track record and program hungry to regain prominence. It may take some time with Prattville playing in 7A, Region 3, but Carr will eventually have the Lions competing for state titles.
