Meet the 2023 ASWA All-State boys basketball team

Undefeated Class 5A state champion Valley was one of the headliners for the Alabama Sports Writers Association 2022-2023 All-State boys basketball team.

The 33-0 Rams, the only undefeated AHSAA team in the state, placed junior Cam-Ron Dooley on the first team and junior Brandon Thomas on the second team. Senior Jamarious Martin was an honorable mention selection, while Marshon Harper was voted Class 5A Coach of the Year.

The team was selected by the Alabama Sports Writers Association prep committee following nominations from statewide coaches. Three finalists for player of the year in each classification will be announced Wednesday morning.

The ASWA selects a first, second and third team along with up to four honorable mention players. This year’s team includes Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year Labaron Philon of Baker, South Alabama signee John Broom of Jacksonville, Westminster Christian star Chase McCarty, Belmont signee Win Miller of Vestavia Hills and Plainview’s state championship duo of Luke Smith and Jonah Williams.

The players of the year – along with Mr. and Miss Basketball – will be announced at the annual ASWA player of the year banquet on April 6 in Montgomery. The banquet is sponsored by Alfa and the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.
