Meet the 2022 AL.com Birmingham All-Region football team

Three Birmingham-area football teams played for state championships this season.

Thompson won its fourth straight Class 7A championship, downing Auburn for the title. The Warriors became the first four-time champion since Class 7A was established in 2014 and only the second team to win four straight in the state’s largest class in AHSAA history. Hoover won four straight Class 6A titles 2002-2005.

Ramsay won the Class 5A championship, beating Charles Henderson while Pleasant Grove lost to Ramsay in semifinal play and Leeds lost to Ramsay in the quarterfinal round.

Mountain Brook won to the Class 6A championship before losing to Saraland, which downed Homewood in double overtime during quarterfinal action and Gardendale lost to Muscle Shoals in quarterfinal play.

Hoover won to the Class 7A semifinal round before losing to Thompson while Vestavia Hills and Hewitt-Trussville each earned a spot in the quarterfinal play.

AL.com named a Player of the Year, Offensive MVP, Defensive MVP, Newcomer of the Year and Coaches of the Year. Award winners are listed separately, but considered first-team selections.

Here is the 2022 Birmingham All-Region football team.

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

QB: Peyton Floyd, Hewitt-Trussville, Jr., 5-11, 175

Dual-threat QB completed 195-of-278 passes for 2,413 yards and 25 TDs with 8 interceptions and ran 190 times for 726 yards and 16 more TDs, accounting for 3,139 yards and 41 TDs. Son of Hewitt-Trussville coach Josh Floyd, he was chosen Class 7A Back of the Year finalist and selected first team all-state.

RB: Ashton Ashford, Ramsay, Jr., 5-8, 175

Class 5A championship game MVP ran for 1,881 yards and 26 TDs on 253 carries in leading the Rams to a 13-2 record and the Region 5 title on the way to the state championship. He was chosen Class 5A Back of the Year finalist and selected first team all-state.

RB: Cole Gamble, Mountain Brook, Jr., 6-0, 195

Speedy back ran 200 times for 1,642 yards with 31 TDs and caught 10 passes for 123 yards in helping the Spartans to a 12-2 record and Class 6A championship game. He was chosen Class 6A Back of the Year finalist and selected first team all-state.

RB: Troy Bruce Jr., Center Point, Sr., 5-8, 175

Elusive back ran for 1,225 yards on 155 carries with 22 TDs, adding 20 receptions for 359 yards and 7 TDs. He was selected Class 6A second team all-state.

WR: Jackson Parris, Homewood, Sr., 5-10, 170

Had 80 receptions for 1,288 yards, averaging 107.3 yards a game, all region bests for receivers. Parris scored 13 TDs (region second-best) and returned 13 kickoffs for 288 yards. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

WR: Braylyn Farrington, Calera, Sr., 5-8, 160

Caught 48 passes for 848 yards and 9 TDs, adding 19 rushes for 49 yards and a TD, 7 punt returns for 74 yards and a TD and 12 kickoff returns for 361 yards and 3 TDs. He was selected Class 6A second team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

WR: Jalen Jones, Ramsay, Sr., 5-10, 170

Grabbed 71 passes for 1,254 yards and region-best 15 TDs, adding 117 yards and 3 TDs rushing. He was selected Class 5A second team all-state and named to the North-South All-Star game.

OL: Ethan Hubbard, Hoover, Sr., 6-6, 285

Duke signee paved the way for Hoover’s prolific ground game. He was selected Class 7A second team all-state

OL: Anthony Miles, Ramsay, Sr., 6-4, 285

Vanderbilt signee had 38 pancake blocks and allowed only 1 sack this season. He was selected Class 5A first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

OL: Davis Peterson, Mountain Brook, Sr., 6-1, 270

Had 62 knockdowns and 41 pancake blocks this season. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

OL: Stanton Ramil, Thompson, Sr., 6-5, 290

Michigan State signee was Thompson’s strongest OL that helped produce over 4,600 yards total offense. He was selected Class 7A first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

TE: Donovan Price, Hewitt-Trussville, Jr., 6-3, 220

Great blocking tight end who also caught 27 passes for 338 yards and 3 TDs. He was selected Class 7A second team all-state.

PK: Payton Argent, Hoover, Sr., 6-0, 175

Converted 34-of-35 PATs along with 8-of-9 field goals with a long of 47. He was selected Class 7A first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

DL: Kavion Henderson, Leeds, Jr., 6-3, 260

4-star recruit contributed 61 tackles with 7 tackles-for-loss, 9 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was chosen Class 6A Lineman of the Year finalist and selected first team all-state.

DL: Hunter Osborne, Hewitt-Trussville, Sr., 6-4, 260

Alabama signee had 52 tackles with 7 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks. He was chosen Class 7A Lineman of the Year finalist, selected first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

DL: Jeremiah Beaman, Parker, Jr., 6-4, 260

4-star recruit had 72 tackles with 11 tackles-for-loss, 11 sacks and 3 interceptions. He was selected Class 6A second team all-state.

DL: Jordan Ross, Vestavia Hills, Jr., 6-4, 220

4-star recruit had 49 tackles with 16 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks, adding several forced fumbles and 2 defensive TDs. He was selected Class 7A second team all-state.

LB: DJ Barber, Clay-Chalkville, Jr., 6-1, 225

Led team with 145 tackles, including 12.5 tackles-for-loss, 8 sacks and 2 interceptions. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

LB: Kaleb Jackson, Hoover, Sr., 5-10, 210

Leading tackler for outstanding Hoover defense, contributing 118 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, 5 sacks and an interception. He was selected Class 7A first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

LB: QB Reese, Ramsay, Jr., 6-0, 205

Best defender for Class 5A champions contributing team best 155 tackles with 24 tackles-for-loss, 5 sacks and 4 interceptions. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

LB: Bradley Shaw, Hoover, Jr., 6-1, 210

4-star recruit had 106 tackles with 15 tackles-for-loss, 5 sacks, an interception and defensive TD. He was selected Class 7A first team all-state.

DB: Anquon Fegans, Thompson, So., 6-2, 190

5-star recruit had region-best 9 interceptions, including 3 for TDs, with 11 pass breakups. He was chosen Class 7A Back of the Year finalist and selected first team all-state.

DB: Rickey Gibson, Hewitt-Trussville, Sr., 6-1, 175

Tennessee signee had team best 3 interceptions along with 13 pass breakups and 41 tackles. He was selected Class 7A first team all-state.

DB: T.J. Metcalf, Pinson Valley, Sr., 6-1, 187

Arkansas signee had 66 tackles, 10 pass breakups, an interception, 3 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He was named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

DB: Dallas Young, Gardendale, Sr., 6-0, 182

Arkansas signee had 66 tackles, with 3 tackles-for-loss and 2 sacks. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

P: Jack Seymour, Chelsea, Sr., 6-0, 155

Punted 31 times for a 41.5 average with 11 downed inside the 20-yard line. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

The Rebels quarterback completed 151-of-252 passes for 1,871 yards with 14 TDs, adding 173 runs for 1,152 yards and 24 TDs, accounting for 3,023 yards and 38 TDs. He was selected Class 7A first team all-state.

Jaylen Mbakwe, Clay-Chalkville, Jr., 6-1, 185

Alabama commitment caught 41 passes for 615 yards and 9 TDs, ran for 118 yards and 2 TDs, returned 9 kickoffs for 145 yards and 2 TDs and also played DB. He was selected Class 6A second team all-state.

Tyler Nelson, Gardendale, Sr., 6-2, 180

Kennesaw State signee was 92-of-168 passing for 1,247 yards and 13 TDs, adding 194 rushes for 1,734 yards and 22 TDs, accounting for 2,981 yards and 35 TDs. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

Earl Woods, Hueytown, Sr., 5-10, 170

Jacksonville State signee completed 119-of-212 passes for 1,825 yards and 24 TDs with 175 runs for 1,527 yards and 22 TDs, accounting for 3,352 yards and region-best 46 TDs. He was chosen Class 6A Back of the Year finalist, selected first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

The Clemson signee was dominant for the Warriors during their fourth straight Class 7A championship with 77 tackles, 21 tackles-for-loss, 9 sacks and 14 QB hurries. He was chosen Class 7A Lineman of the Year finalist, selected first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

Homewood at Pelham Football

The Homewood QB completed 185-of-298 passes for a region-best 2,677 yards and ran 148 times for 812 yards and 11 TDs, accounting for 3,489 total yards and 38 TDs in leading the Patriots to the Class 6A quarterfinal round. He was selected Class 6A first team all-state.

Kelby Collins, DL, Gardendale, Sr., 6-5, 260

Florida signee Collins contributed 111 tackles (10.1 per game) with 9.5 tackles-for-loss and 14 sacks while helping the Rockets to the Class 6A quarterfinal round. He was chosen Class 6A Lineman of the Year finalist, selected Class 6A first team all-state and named to the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

Eric Handley, QB, Pleasant Grove, Jr., 6-2, 200

The first-year Pleasant Grove QB completed 133-of-200 passes for 2,506 yards and region-best 33 TDs with 7 interceptions while helping the Spartans to the Class 5A semifinal before falling to champions Ramsay. He was selected Class 5A second team all-state.

Freeman guided Thompson to its fifth straight Class 7A title game and fourth straight championship, the first four-time champion in Class 7A and marking only the second time in AHSAA history a team won four straight in the big-school classification. Thompson lost its first two games of the season and also suffered a shutout loss to Hoover in regular season play before cruising through the playoffs, outscoring opponents 144-46, including a 40-10 win over Hoover.

Super 7: Class 5A Championship

The second-year head coach led the Class 5A Rams to a 13-2 record — Ramsay lost only to Class 6A Parker and Class 7A finalist Auburn — and the school’s second state championship. Ramsay tied the school record for wins in a season and the offense scored a school-record 597 points while the defense allowed 16.7 points a game. Jackson was the school’s offensive coordinator before earning his first head coaching position in 2021.
