He’s gray. He’s (almost) hairless. He uses a cart to help keep up with his friends.

And, now, Scooter, a 7-year-old Chinese Crested hairless with a face anyone should love, is now the proud owner of the title of the “World’s Ugliest Dog.”

Scooter won his title last Friday at the Sonomoa-Marin Fair  in Petaluma, California. And while the title may sound like an insult, organizers said the event actually raises awareness of “extraordinary canines that have defied adversity and captured the hearts of attendees.”

Scooter’s human, Linda Elmquist of Tucson Arizona said his journey began when a breeder of Chinese Crested dogs brought a puppy with two deformed hind legs to an animal control facility in Tucson, Arizona, with the intention of euthanizing the puppy. Rescue service volunteers with Saving Animals From Euthanasia stepped in and found Scooter his forever home and, before long, he was using his front two legs to navigate all sorts of obstacles.

He later received a cart that makes exploring his surroundings even easier.

“I am overjoyed and incredibly proud that Scooter has been crowned the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest,” Elmquist said in a statement. “Despite the challenges he has faced with his deformed hind legs, Scooter has defied all odds and shown us the true meaning of resilience and determination. He has become an inspiration to countless people around the world.”

Second place was won by Wild Thang, a 7-year-old Pekingese owned by Ann Lewis. Taking third place and the coveted Spirit award was Harold Bartholomew, a 16-year-old Chihuahua owned by Sabrina Impelido.
