Medical AI, MLB all-stars: Down in Alabama
A degree in AI
Artificial Intelligence is becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives. And soon, you’ll be able to get a master’s degree in it at UAB, reports AL.com’s Williesha Morris.
The school will offer a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine beginning Spring 2025. School officials say the program makes UAB a world leader in the field. Dr. Rubin Pillay said AI is expected to impact health care quality, costs and more. “We can actually just from a chest X-ray, diagnose diabetes, diagnose cardiovascular risk and diagnose a host of other medical conditions,” he said.
You know, that technology will be great at the doctor’s office, but what I need are medical bots at grocery scanners to recommend I put the bacon back on the shelf.
Would that be helpful or annoying? You might set off the buzzer at the door: “Excuse me, Hoss, but I detected a higher blood pressure than your last visit and there’s red meat in your buggy.”
Little River Canyon fall
A 21-year-old man from Georgia took a 40-foot fall from atop the falls in Little River Canyon on Sunday, reports AL.com’s William Thornton.
Emergency responders found the man on a rock ledge beneath the falls and used equipment to pull him back to the top, from where he was then airlifted for medical care.
The National Park Service reminded visitors to “utilize caution when in the park.”
Midseason Classic
Clay Holmes of Slocumb will join Gunnar Henderson of Selma on the American League All-Star team next week, reports AL.com’s Mark Inabinett.
Holmes is a right-handed closer for the New York Yankees and now a two-time all-star. So far this season he has 19 saves and a 3.00 earned-run average. He’s struck out 37 batters in 36 innings of work.
Henderson had already been named to the team, with fans voting him the AL’s starting shortstop. After the starting lineups are set, pitchers and reserves are selected by player voting and the Commissioner’s Office.
The Major League All-Star Game will be 7 p.m. Alabama time next Tuesday, July 16, in Arlington, Texas.
Dabo’s godson
And speaking of making the team … AL.com’s Joseph Goodman reports that Birmingham native Tanner Tessmann will be on the U.S. men’s soccer team during this summer’s Paris Olympics.
Tessmann, by the way, is the godson of Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney.
Attention, shoppers
Free shipping on small orders by Sam’s Club Plus members is going away soon, reports AL.com’s Shauna Stuart.
Currently, a perk for Plus members is free shipping. But beginning Aug. 19, free shipping will only apply to orders of $50 or more.
If you’re one of the people who can keep your Sam’s haul to under 50 bucks, I’m impressed … but you’re one of the ones affected.
So to get the free shipping, I suppose you’d have to purchase four bags of Member’s Mark Southern Style Chicken Bites instead of two.
Or 11 rotisserie chickens instead of 10.
Quoting
“But people do not lose their constitutional rights behind prison walls. The Eighth Amendment guarantees humane conditions, which necessitates that prison officials take reasonable measures to provide for prisoners’ safety.”
U.S. Department of Justice, in a brief filed in a decade-old lawsuit brought by former and current inmates at St. Clair Correctional Facility. The inmates claim that unsafe conditions at the prison are to blame for violence, sexual abuse and excessive force there.
