McGill-Toolen hires former Fairhope, Enterprise coach David Faulkner

Former Fairhope and Enterprise head coach David Faulkner has been hired as McGill-Toolen’s next head football coach.

The school announced the hire Monday morning.

Faulkner, who has been on Neal Brown’s staff at West Virginia, replaces Norman Joseph. Joseph was fired last month after going 12-10 in two years as head coach.

“After a very intense and thorough search for a head coach, I am excited to announce that we have hired David Faulkner from the University of West Virginia,” McGill-Toolen athletic director Bill Griffin said. “Coach Faulkner is no stranger to our area or to the AHSAA having coached at Fairhope, Foley, Bryant, Enterprise and Hoover before joining Coach Neal Brown at Troy University and the University of West Virginia.”

Griffin said McGill would hold a press conference to introduce Faulkner at a later time.

Faulkner is 67-56 in 11 years as a high school head coach. He spent one year at Alma Bryant, three years at Fairhope and seven at Enterprise.

He went 28-9 at Fairhope, including an 11-win season in 2009 and a Class 6A quarterfinal appearance in 2011.

His best season at Enterprise came in 2016 when he went 10-2 and lost to, ironically, McGill-Toolen 27-23 in the second round of the 7A playoffs. The Yellow Jackets won that game when quarterback Bubba Thompson hit Larry Rembert on an 85-yard TD pass with 1:04 left.

After a season as offensive coordinator at Grayson (Ga.), Faulkner joined Brown’s staff at West Virginia as special assistant to the head coach. He spent 2019-2021 as director of player personnel at Troy University.
