McDonald’s could be discontinuing fan-favorite item at some locations

It looks like the days of Krispy Kreme doughnuts – at least in some locations – could soon be coming to an end.

In their latest financial statement, the national doughnut chain said while its sweet treats are available in 2,400 McDonald’s locations, it is pausing any expansions set for this year and the future of the partnership appears in jeopardy.

“(Krispy Kreme) is reassessing the deployment schedule together with McDonald’s while it works to achieve a profitable business model for all parties and does not expect to launch in any additional restaurants in the second quarter of 2025,” the company said in a statement.

“Krispy Kreme continues to believe in the long-term opportunity of profitable growth through the U.S. nationwide expansion including McDonald’s,” the statement continued, but the brand withdrew its prior full-year financial outlook and will not update it due to “macroeconomic softness and the uncertainty around the McDonald’s deployment schedule.”

Krispy Kreme and McDonald’s launched their partnership in March 2024 and, at the time, plans were to expand to all 13,500-plus locations by 2026. Three types of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, original glazed, chocolate iced with sprinkles and chocolate iced “Kreme” filled, are available.

The introduction of Krispy Kreme came after McDonald’s pulled its Apple Fritter, Blueberry Muffins and Cinnamon Rolls. Adding Krispy Kreme, McDonald’s officials said, gave the fast-food chain “a chance to unlock new business opportunities in the breakfast category and throughout the day.”
