McConaughey in Tuscaloosa for Alabama-Texas? Actor teases football game visit

Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey is currently filming a movie in Alabama that will wrap up location shoots here in July, but the Hollywood leading man hinted he’ll be back in September.

McConaughey was in the Green Valley neighborhood of Hoover on June 29 filming scenes for “The Rivals of Amziah King” when, as he drove away in his Lincoln Aviator with the window down, Hoover resident Mary Pugh said, “Mr. McConaughey, can we get a wave?”

The Oscar-winning actor and Texas native flashed a Hook’em horns sign and said, “See you in September.”

That was an apparent reference to when the Texas Longhorns play the Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa on Sept. 9. The 2023 game will culminate a home-and-home series between the programs after Bama defeated Texas 20-19 in Austin last season.

McConaughey, a father of three, enrolled his youngest son, Livingston, 10, at a one-day Nick Saban youth football camp in Tuscaloosa on June 13, according to ESPN.

McConaughey is almost as famous for his football fandom and support for the University of Texas as his movie stardom.

He served as a guest picker with Lee Corso and the crew on ESPN Gameday on Sept. 5, 2019, for the Texas A&M at Clemson pre-game show. He picked Clemson. Clemson won, 24-10.

He teamed up with Will Ferrell as they did an introductory segment for Texas and the University of Southern California before the Jan. 4, 2006 BCS Championship Game.

“Football is king in Texas,” McConaughey said in the intro. “We thrive on it.”

Texas quarterback Vince Young led the Longhorns to a win over the USC Trojans, led by quarterback Matt Leinhart and running back Reggie Bush. The national championship for the Longhorns was their first since 1970.

The Longhorns and their rival Oklahoma will leave the Big 12 for the SEC in 2024, so it’s possible with see McConaughey again in Alabama and other SEC cities as soon as 2024.
