A McCalla man is now formally charged in the death of his girlfriend’s toddler son.

Oscar Espinoza Guadarrama, 24, is charged with capital murder in the slaying of 19-month-old Gabriel Adriel Alonso Romero.

The warrant was issued Tuesday night. Guadarrama has been held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail since Saturday.

The investigation began Saturday night when Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies were called to the emergency room at UAB Medical Center West on a report of a child who had been brought in with multiple injuries.

Gabriel was pronounced dead at 8:07 p.m. Authorities said the child had injuries around his head area.

The family lived on Mayfield Road in McCalla.

Gabriel’s funeral is set for Friday.
