McAdory scores early then holds off Pinson Valley for victory
McAdory scored on its first two possessions and held on to down Pinson Valley 28-17, breaking a four game losing streak to the Indians.
McAdory quarterback Jacob Clopton led the offense, completing 8-of-16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown and running nine times for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
“Last year they beat us with the simple mistakes we made,” Clopton said. “We just wanted to capitalize on the moment.”
“Clopton came out and played hard considering he’s not all the way healthy,” said McAdory coach Aryvia Holmes. “But he’s a tough kid and he showed that tonight with the way he played.
“I’m just extremely proud how we executed tonight. It was a big win for us.”
Clopton started the scoring with a 12-yard run with 10:10 left after Jamari Harris returned the opening kickoff 46 yards. The Yellow Jackets added a 5-yard touchdown catch from JaCorey Whitted with 6:39 remaining in the first period for a 14-0 lead.
Pinson Valey (1-1) methodically ran the ball for two second quarter scores, 5 yards by Rico Freeman and 1 yard by quarterback Dylan Reese, to tie score.
McAdory (1-1) took the lead for good when Dorian Martin forced a fumble, recovered by Marquis Cottingham, leading to a 6-play, 61-yard drive capped by Khomari Sheppard’s 9-yard run with 23 seconds left before the half.
“When you have a lot of penalties and turnovers it’s hard to win a game,” said Pinson Valley coach Gentrell Eatman. “We had a chance to make a statement before halftime, but fumbled and a fumble after halftime hurt us. We have to learn how to finish the game, but the ball just didn’t bounce our way tonight.”
Sheppard led the McAdory run game with 41 yards and a score on 10 carries.
Clopton added his second rushing TD on a 19-yarder with 11:22 left in the third quarter for a 28-14 lead.
“I told my O-line to give me one good play because I knew I was going to get it in the end zone,” Clopton said of the final scoring run.
Jose Cupido closed the scoring with a 32-yard Pinson Valley field goal with 3:23 left in the game.
Pinson Valley quarterback Reese was 7-of-17 for 141 yards and the running TD while Josh Woods ran 17 times for 128 yards.
