Matthew McConaughey is on a restaurant tour of Alabama, it seems, at least shooting movies if not enjoying meals there as he films “The Rivals of Amziah King” this summer.

The latest sighting on McConaWatch located the Oscar-winning star of “Dallas Buyers Club” and “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” at the Pell City Steak House Restaurant, located at 2401 Comer Ave., right off of Highway 231.

Rev. Chuck Lackey, pastor at Calvary Baptist Church of Odenville, happened to drive by the moment McConaughey walked across the entrance of the beloved Alabama steakhouse. “Alright, alright, alright!,” Lackey told AL.com he shouted at the star, referencing McConaughey’s iconic line uttered by his character Wooderson in the 1993 film “Dazed and Confused.”

Lackey said he wasn’t sure McConaughey, in conversation with a crew member, heard the line and thought maybe he should have thrown the “horns up” sign to the Texas Longhorns fan instead.

Lackey said he was driving along 231, which saw “police everywhere” blocking traffic to may way for the “Amziah King” shoot. “Traffic was bad,” Lackey said, noting he stopped at a red light just long enough to spot McConaughey and snap a photo. “I happened to look over, and all the sudden he walks out of the restaurant. He was talking to a crew member when I yelled ‘Alright, alright, alright.’”

Anna Turner of Pell City shot a terrific video of McConaughey wearing sunglasses and slowly driving in a black Lincoln Aviator (with police escort), even rolling down his window to flash a grin and the “horns up” Texas Longhorns hand gesture to onlookers. Cheering and smiling fans made some noise for the “Interstellar” star as he made his way to the next setup on the new film from director Andrew Patterson.

“He was looking directly at me,” Turner told AL.com “I was burning up hot, and I still had chill bumps.”

Turner said the moment was “super exciting,” and a great way to spend a summer day with her daughter Piper Turner and her mom Pam Thompson (and they’d still love to meet him, by the way). As McConaughey pulled out of the First Baptist Church parking lot, Turner said they ran to get a better view. He rolled by in the car; they cheered and asked for a selfie. Turner said McConaughey smiled and politely said, “I’m just gonna keep on rollin’.”

Watch the full segment. “We were all squealing,” Turner told The River. “We had started out in the parking lot across the street and then kept getting braver and braver and moving closer. The police kept telling us to move back, but they were in good spirits and having fun with it as well. We got pretty close.”

The Pell City Historical Society shared a Facebook post about the movie star’s visit called “The Day Everyone in Pell City Smiled,” noting the Pell City Steakhouse opened in 1948 by the family of Pell City’s own Joe Dorough (Joe’s parents were Ed and Edna Gray Dorough, the post says).

The post says the restaurant specialized in short orders and meat-and-three, plus “the best cheeseburgers ever.” It recalls regulars who would visit and travelers who would stop on their way to all places from Chicago to Panama City. “The Pell City Steakhouse has been a tradition in Pell City through its 70 plus years of good food, good service, and good friendships,” the post says. “It has hosted class reunions, family reunions, business luncheons, and every day ‘hello’s.’

“There have been celebrities who have stopped to eat at the Steakhouse, and now the Steakhouse can say with pride that a portion of a movie was filmed there … The sight of the very handsome Matthew McConaughey made EVERYONE IN PELL CITY SMILE!”

McConaughey is spending part of his summer filming a new movie, “The Rivals of Amziah King,” in the Birmingham and Bessemer areas. The “A Time to Kill” and “Magic Mike” star was recently spotted filming at J&J Grocery and Deli in Bessemer and eating a meal at Frothy Monkey in downtown Birmingham, prompting those of us on McConaWatch to ponder where he might pop up next in our state.

This isn’t McConaughey’s first visit to Alabama. He previously filmed scenes for 2006′s “Failure to Launch” in Cherokee and Etowah counties, according to a 2005 report by The Gadsden Times. The actor went rock climbing at Cherokee Rock Village in Leesburg and filmed a mountain-biking scene on a nearby ridge, a producer for the movie said. McConaughey also was spotted in Mobile in February 2015, around the time he filmed “Free State of Jones” in Louisiana.
