Matthew McConaughey brings smiles to patients at Children’s of Alabama: ‘So kind and personable’

Matthew McConaughey has been filming a movie in Alabama this summer, but the Oscar-winning actor made time to visit patients at Children’s of Alabama, a pediatric hospital in Birmingham.

“Our sincere thanks to Matthew McConaughey for bringing smiles to our patients at Children’s of Alabama,” the hospital said Friday on social media, posting photos of the actor’s visit on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

It’s unclear when McConaughey visited Children’s, and a hospital spokeswoman said no more information would be released. However, the actor has been in Alabama for several weeks, starring in a crime thriller called “The Rivals of Amziah King.”

The movie, directed by Andrew Patterson, has filmed in several Central Alabama locations in June and July, mostly in and around the Birmingham metro area. Fans have spotted McConaughey at places ranging from The Frosty Mug in Jasper to J&J Grocery & Deli in Bessemer to Automotive Friction Material in downtown Birmingham.

Invariably, folks have described their brushes with fame as extremely positive ones, as McConaughey has greeted the public in a relaxed and congenial way.

It appears that McConaughey’s visit to Children’s was no exception. “He was so kind and personable to our patients and families. So thankful he took time to visit with them!,” Melissa Johnson said in an Instagram comment.

People who weren’t present for McConaughey’s visit to Children’s seemed excited, as well, praising the star for his caring ways.

“I love this! Everyone has been wondering for weeks where he would be and how to get a picture,” Jill Taylor Payne said on Facebook, “There he was spending time with all these little superstars.”

“As if we don’t already admire him so much!!!!,” Mary Byram said on Facebook. “He will always have a place in the heart of Sweet Home Alabama!” Emma Golden added, “He the Best, in acting and as a caring person. Thank you Sir for your kindness!!”

Julie Joyner Wells said her family got McConaughey’s autograph, and posted a photo on Facebook, to boot. Other fans chimed in with “Awesome!” or “Alright, alright, alright!”

The actor, 53, is a household name in the entertainment world. He’s known for movies such as “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Dazed and Confused,” “A Time to Kill,” “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Magic Mike,” “Mud,” “Free State of Jones,” “Interstellar” and more. He won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and other accolades for his role in 2013′s “Dallas Buyers Club.” McConaughey also earned acclaim for his work in the first season of the TV series “True Detective.”

This isn’t McConaughey’s first visit to Alabama. The actor previously filmed scenes for 2006′s “Failure to Launch” in Cherokee and Etowah counties, according to a 2005 report by The Gadsden Times. The actor went rock climbing at Cherokee Rock Village in Leesburg and filmed a mountain-biking scene on a nearby ridge, a producer for the movie said.

McConaughey also was spotted in Mobile in February 2015, around the time he filmed “Free State of Jones” in Louisiana.
