Matt Ryan takes job with CBS, says he’s not retiring

Former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is entering the world of broadcasting, but apparently has not closed the door on continuing his football career.

Ryan, who spent the 2022 season with the Indianapolis Colts but is now a free agent, has taken a job as studio and game analyst for CBS Sports. He will call NFL games for the network, as well as appear on “The NFL Today” and other studio shows on CBS and its streaming outlets.

“As one of the NFL’s marquee quarterbacks for the past 15 years, we’re thrilled to add Matt to our talented roster of NFL analysts,” said Harold Bryant, CBS Sports executive producer and executive vice president of production. “He has played the game at the highest level, including winning an MVP award and taking his team to the Super Bowl, and will bring a fresh perspective to CBS Sports. We look forward to Matt sharing his knowledge, insight and opinions with our viewers and bolstering our NFL coverage.”

Ryan also shared the news on social media Monday, but was quick to point out it was “not a retirement post.”

Ryan — who turns 38 on Wednesday — spent the first 14 years of his NFL career with the Falcons, where he was the NFL Most Valuable Player in 2016 and took Atlanta to the Super Bowl that same season. He holds virtually every Falcons career, single-season and single-game passing record, and ranks in the Top 10 in NFL history in career passing yards (62,792), completions (5,551) and touchdowns (381).

Ryan started 12 games for the Colts last season after traded being by the Falcons in March 2022, passing for 3,057 yards and 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions while missing five games with a shoulder injury. Indianapolis released him in March, then drafted Florida quarterback Anthony Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in April.
