Massive memorial for Willie Mays featured at Rickwood Field

The paint for a memorial to Willie Mays was still drying on the grass behind home plate at Rickwood Field a few hours before the game on Thursday.

The San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals play at Rickwood at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals, playing as the St. Louis Stars of the old Negro Leagues, stepped onto the field for pregame warmups around 2:45 p.m. The Giants are wearing vintage uniforms honoring the San Francisco Seals.

The game is being called MLB at Rickwood: A tribute to the Negro Leagues. It’s the first official Major League Baseball game played in the state of Alabama, and it comes two days after Fairfield, Alabama, native Willie Mays passed away at the age of 93. Mays played at Rickwood with the Birmingham Black Barons in 1948 before signing with the New York Giants.

Mays’ death has added an extraordinary circumstance to the game, which will be broadcasted nationally on Fox. MLB, Birmingham and the Friends of Rickwood updated and transformed Rickwood Field for the game. The old stadium on 2nd Ave North never looked better. The field is brand new and certified for games at the major league level. Batting practice St. Louis Stars was set to begin at 3:10 p.m.
