Mary G. Montgomery knocks off Charles Henderson

Jared Hollins ran for a couple of short touchdowns and dropped the hammer on Charles Henderson with a 33-yard scoring pass to James Bolton just after Mary G. Montgomery stopped Charles Henderson on a fourth-and-1 as the Vikings beat the Trojans 19-7 Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

MGM’s senior quarterback was an efficient 16-of-20 passing for 209 yards and Bolton had six receptions for 77 yards.

The Vikings (2-0), ranked No. 9 in the state in Class 7A, won their eighth straight regular-season game and held No. 2-ranked 5A Charles Henderson (0-1) — which reached the Super 7 last year — to only 44 yards rushing. It was only the fourth time in 68 games since 2000 MGM beat a ranked opponent.

Hollins, who has committed to South Alabama, scored on runs of 6 and 2 yards.

The Vikings led 19-0 until Trojans star Jywon Boyd caught a 3-yard TD pass from Parker Adams early in the fourth quarter.

“I’m pleased with the outcome but not pleased with the overall execution,” MGM coach Zach Golson said. “But that was a really good football team we played. We got a win on the road. It’s a great place to play and we found a way to win.”

Both teams were plagued by penalties — the Vikings had 16 for 119 yards and Henderson had 15 for 128.
