Mary G. Montgomery beats Fairhope to stay undefeated
Mary G. Montgomery is off to its best start in more than a decade.
The Vikings (4-0 overall, 2-0 in Class 7A, Region 1) snapped a six-game losing streak to Fairhope with Friday’s 24-10 victory over the Pirates at W.C. Majors Field in Fairhope.
The Vikings are 4-0 to start the season for the first time since 2007, running its regular-season win streak to 10 games.
“Proud of our guys grinding out the victory,” Vikings coach Zach Golson said.
Shondell Harris ran for two touchdowns and the Vikings defense forced four turnovers to sink
The Vikings trailed for the first time this season in the second quarter, as Fairhope’s Preston Godfrey scored from six yards out. The Pirates took advantage of great field position for their lone touchdown of the game after a bad punt snap by the Vikings. Fairhope needed four plays to go 20 yards for the score.
It marked the first time the Vikings have allowed a touchdown in the first half all season.
Harris scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter. Harris lined up at quarterback for MGM on a fourth down run to tie the game at 7-all.
“It’s just another weapon we have on offense to make us stronger,” Vikings quarterback Jared Hollins said.
MGM led 10-7 at halftime.
The Vikings forcing three second-half turnovers, Fairhope finished with 129 yards oftotal offense.
“We got after them tonight,” Golson said. “The turnovers played a big part for us, it led to us just grinding it out, making plays.”
The Pirates’ last two offensive possessions resulted in turnovers, and Jariell Lett’s interception with 3:04 remaining sealed the victory for MGM.
“We’ve got playmakers all over the field, tonight we showed, even in a tight ballgame, why we are the number four team in the state,” Hollins said.
Did you know?: MGM has not committed a turnover this season.
Star of the game: Shondell Harris played on offense and defense, finishing with 64 yards and adding multiple tackles for losses on defense.
Key sequence: With the game tied 10-all in the third quarter, MGM drove four plays and scored when Trakarris Collier caught a 61-yard pass from Hollins. Collier came down with the catch after the ball was tipped by a Fairhope defender. “Concentration, I kept my eyes on the ball the whole time after the tip grabbed it for the score,” Collier said.
Stat sheet: Hollins passed for 148 yards, completing 12-of-20 passes and a touchdown. He added 41 yards rushing. … Troy Flowers paced the Vikings on the ground with 82 yards rushing.
Fairhope’s Jackson Robertson got his first start as Pirate quarterback, completing 12-of-24 passes for 78 yards. … The Vikings offense amassed more than 300 yards for the third time this season, with 160 yards rushing and 148 yards passing. … James Bolton added four catches for 45 yards for MGM.

What’s next?: Both teams continue region play next week. Mary Montgomery (4-0,2-0) plays Alma Bryant at home Thursday, while Fairhope (1-3,0-1) hosts Davidson.
