Marlon Humphrey provides ‘definition for an LSU guy’

Baltimore defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 34-20 on Thursday night, so the Ravens don’t play on Sunday. Maybe that will give cornerback Marlon Humphrey and middle linebacker Patrick Queen extra time to debate the merits of the football programs at their alma maters — Alabama and LSU, respectively.

The subject came up when Queen was a guest on the most recent edition of Marlon Humphrey’s podcast, “Punch Line.”

Humphrey shared with Queen his description of the typical LSU football player.

“An LSU guy, this is how it usually goes: Somebody makes a football play,” Humphrey said. “Somebody else celebrates more than the person that made the football play. This guy might get a penalty for over-celebrating, and he didn’t even make the play. That is the definition. This guy right here celebrating, talking crap to the opposing sideline, getting the team a 15-yard penalty is literally the definition of an LSU guy. I got a text last week. It said: ‘LSU players are so dumb.’ He made a play, got up, celebrated and then went down – injury timeout. That right there sums up the Louisiana State University football.

“I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what’s in y’all’s water. I mean y’all some dogs. I’ll be honest: Y’all some dogs. I’ll be honest with you. But it’s something about not making the play.”

Queen inquired: “Why can’t we be happy for our teammates?”

“Then celebrate with them,” Humphrey said. “Sometimes y’all be dadgum 20 yards away from the play: ‘I’m him. I’m him.’ You actually just got pancaked. No offense to Tyrann Mathieu. You remember the time Tyrann Mathieu, he comes off the edge, gets completely pancaked, pummeled in the dirt, gets up to the lineman like, ‘Yeah, you see that? Tackle for loss!’ You’re on the ground.”

When Queen got his chance to counter by describing the typical Alabama player, the linebacker said: “For me a Bama guy is somebody who’s, like, grimy, did some things in the past that got them to Bama. I would say (Humphrey)’s not in that situation, but a lot of the other guys were. I feel like they’re real dogs. They got a lot of fight to them. I feel like they also do the celebrating thing, though, like we do at LSU.”

Each player was on a CFP national championship team – Humphrey in 2015 and Queen in 2019.

LSU defeated Clemson 42-25 in the CFP national title game on Jan. 13, 2020, in New Orleans to complete an undefeated season.

Queen said “there’s no debate” that his team was the greatest in college football history.

“I will say this,” Humphrey said. “Based off my natty team compared to his, his team is definitely better.”

Alabama defeated Clemson 45-40 in the CFP national-title game on Jan. 11, 2016, in Glendale, Arizona.

While Humphrey conceded Queen’s title team was better than his, the starting lineup for Alabama in its victory over Clemson produced 17 NFL Draft picks, and among the Crimson Tide substitutes in the game, another 14 were drafted. And four more who played for Alabama in the game also played in the NFL without being drafted.

The starting lineup for LSU in its victory over Clemson produced 19 NFL Draft picks, and among the Tigers substitutes in the game, another 10 were drafted. And four more who played for LSU in the game also played in the NFL without being drafted.

Humphrey was not ready to call the 2019 LSU team the greatest ever, though.

“It’s still some Bama teams that would wipe the floor with y’all,” Humphrey said.

Humphrey was asked to name the Alabama quarterback that could have beaten the 2019 LSU team, because, Queen said, “Tua (Tagovailoa) was y’all’s only chance.”

On Nov. 9, 2019, Tagovailoa threw for 418 yards and four touchdowns against LSU, but the Crimson Tide lost to the Tigers 46-41.

Humphrey also was told that Mac Jones wouldn’t be the answer because “his hands were shaking when he came to play us,” although in Alabama’s 55-17 victory over LSU on Dec. 5, 2020, Jones passed for 385 yards and four touchdowns.

Humphrey spoke up for Jones.

“I firmly believed with all my heart that Mac Jones would go to New England and be the next Tom Brady,” Humphrey said. “And there’s still a chance that could happen.”

At 8-3, Baltimore will come out of Week 11 of the 2023 NFL season with a one-game lead in the AFC North. On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns square off for second place in the division standings with 6-3 records.

The Ravens return to action against the Los Angeles Chargers at 7:20 p.m. CST Nov. 26 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
