Mark Stoops now staying at Kentucky after Texas A&M deal falls through, reports say

After multiple reports surfaced Saturday that Mark Stoops was leaving Kentucky to become head football coach at Texas A&M, someone apparently had a change of heart.

Stoops will not coach the Aggies and will now stay at Kentucky, according to reports by Kentucky Sports Radio, ESPN, TexAgs.com and The Athletic. Where the breakdown might have taken place was not immediately clear.

The 56-year-old Stoops is 73-64 in 11 seasons with the Wildcats, including 7-5 this season. Kentucky finished the regular season with a 38-31 win over Louisville on Saturday.

Texas A&M is left still looking for a replacement for Jimbo Fisher, who was fired Nov. 12 before finishing his sixth season. Other coaches who have reportedly been on the Aggies’ radar are Duke’s Mike Elko (a former Aggies assistant), Arizona’s Jedd Fisch, Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Texas-San Antonio’s Jeff Traylor.
