Mardi Gras at Panama City Beach? Florida community set to get in on the fun

Panama City Beach isn’t just for getting a suntan.

The popular beach community is gearing up for not one, but two Mardi Gras celebrations in Bay County over the next week and a half, starting Friday with the Panama City Beach Mardi Gras and Music Festival, according to Visit Panama City Beach.

Friday’s activities include float tours, a kids fun zone and parade, a second line parade, live music in the evening followed by a fireworks show.

Saturday kicks off with a Mardi Gras 5K Fun Run, followed by more live music including headliner and country music star Mark Wills, and the main event — the Krewe of Dominique Youx Mardi Gras at the Beach Parade at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.

The Krewe of Dominique parade rolls from the intersection of Powell Adams Road and Front Beach Road, south on Front Beach Road to Pier Park Drive, then west on Pier Park Drive to Starfish Street, north on Starfish to Bluefish Drive, then east on Bluefish to West Park Drive, then north on West Park to Stingray Drive, where it disbands.

“It brings everybody together,” Visit Panama City Beach spokesperson Sydney Clifton told the Panama City News Herald about the Mardi Gras festival. “It’s a great environment (that’s) family oriented. … It’s also free, so it doesn’t cost any money for you to come and have a good time with your family.”

The following week, the Panama City’s St. Andrews community will host its Mardi Gras Parade & Festival, hosted by the Krewe of St. Andrews, which was founded in 1997. The parade annually draws an estimated 50,000 in attendance and features more than 14 Krewes and 30 floats, along with other parade units.

The Krewe of St. Andrews event stretches over three days, Feb. 2-4, and features not one, but four parades — a kids parade, a mask parade, the main parade on Saturday, and a pet parade on Sunday.

The main parade rolls at 2 p.m. Saturday, starting on W. 11th Street near St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, then traveling west to Beck Avenue, where it turns north and goes until reaching 5th Street, where it disbands.
